9 Things that Hold Artists Back from Success by Gwenda Joyce

The year is new, and you want to start off fresh so that you can be a more successful artist this year than last. But what you don’t know may be holding you back and preventing you from reaching your full potential as an artist this year. Not your art-making, but the way you put yourself out into the world.

Before you can make new plans, review the past to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes. This way you will avoid getting the same results as before, and end up frustrated again.

In working with many artists over the years, I see the same problems repeated and other problems that are never solved. Find out what makes some artists struggle and others succeed. Does any of these thing get in your way?

1 Be clear on what you’re doing and what you want. We can reach our goals if we have a plan that leads us to get results and then work the plan.

2 De-mystify the process. When we understand that what we need to do to increase sales is to build a reputation and build an audience, then we can do it.

3 Have a basic understanding of business. It’s not natural for artists to spend time on this part, but if you don’t, you’re only half-way there. Upgrade your business skills.

4 Change your negative mindset. It doesn’t have to be so hard and you don’t have to struggle. You may not understand what is blocking you. When you clear your blocks, you will open up to opportunity and good things will come to you. If not, you will stay stuck and frustrated.

5 Recognize that fears will lead you astray without your knowing it. Misconceptions about what you need to do can be the result of fear of success and resistance to seeing things a different way. Learn how to see the difference so you can follow the right path.

6 Identify and connect with your ideal audience. The right audience for you may be different from another artist’s.

7 Have a system for marketing to your target audience.

8 Understand about investing in yourself and your future. Trying to do it all yourself is the artist’s dilemma. You don’t have to do everything alone. Learn how to get support and thrive.

9 Learn proven methods for success. When you find out that something works, adapt it and implement it for yourself.

Wishing you all a year of success!
